Thatched
Cottages, Broadhembury, Devon
An old garage
plot in the centre of Broadhembury was put to good use with the
design and building of two new thatched cottages. Design Therapy
worked closely with the Conservation department to develop the
design of the houses which sit at the entrance to this well preserved
village. The majority of properties in the village, owned and
maintained by a family estate still have thatched roofs and rendered
walls and, front directly onto the street. By following the curvature
of the road the houses were designed to lead the visitor directly
into the central village square,. The use of lime render, thatch,
slate, natural oak, pebbles and cobbles – all traditional
materials and textures – help to blend the new buildings
into the historic landscape.
